How do you thrive?

Consider a typical Monday morning: the phone won’t stop ringing, your inbox is overflowing with unread messages, and you have a stain all over your shirt from spilling coffee on your way to work. What’s the matter with this image? Stress has become an inextricable part of our everyday lives, and it is not only interfering with our mental health, but it is also driving us to death. As scientists continue to link stress to a the number of serious health problems, it’s worth considering why we’re doing this to ourselves.

Arianna Huffington, the author of Thrive: The Third Metric to Redefining Success and Creating a Life of Well-Being, Wisdom, and Wonder, takes us on a path to achieve success, but not in the conventional sense. She discusses why it’s important that we redefine success and provide a “third metric” to our standard meaning, which only includes money and power. Well-being, wisdom, wonder, and giving make up the third measure. It boosts our well-being, satisfaction, and even productivity.

We just want a decent life for ourselves and our families. But, exactly, what does happiness entail? What does it have to do with achievement? Performance has traditionally been measured in terms of wealth and power, but for most of us, wealth and power are insufficient to make us happy. So, in order to live a life that truly fulfills us, we must redefine success.

This was a lesson the author learned shortly after co-founding The Huffington Post in 2005. She used to measure performance purely in terms of money and power. As a result, she poured everything she had into her new business and worked like a maniac, putting in up to 18 hours per day. She persevered through her exhaustion.

However, in 2007, the author passed out in her office, shattering her cheekbone. The findings were definitive after consulting with multiple doctors and conducting a series of tests: Huffington’s unforgiving work schedule had pushed her body to the breaking point, resulting in her collapse.

The occurrence served as a wake-up call. Huffington recognized that her obsession with money and power had led to self-destructive actions. She had lost her personal wellbeing and satisfaction by thinking of success solely in terms of those two metrics.

To the untrained eye, Huffington seemed to have gained popularity as a result of her wealth and influence. But it was obvious to her that she wasn’t flourishing. As a result, she had to reconsider her life and define success for herself. To that end, she realized that thriving, living a life of real fulfillment, was the third crucial metric for achieving real success.

Thriving means making time in your life to take care of yourself, tap into life’s wisdom, experience magic, and give back. As you can see, wealth and power do not guarantee true happiness. But what do we really miss out on when we just see life in those terms? Continue reading to learn more!

Living a truly successful and rewarding life requires a strong sense of well-being. But what exactly does it entail? Taking care of your wellbeing on a regular basis to avoid illness is what well-being is all about. Stress, as you can see, is a serious danger to your health and mental well-being. That is why it is so important to look after your health: it is a way of minimizing stress and its negative effects. Opting out of the toxic job standard is one way to take care of yourself. Make getting enough sleep a priority and carving out time throughout the day to communicate with your inner self a priority. And despite what you might think, supporting your well-being doesn’t have to mean sacrificing success.

Wisdom can seem to be a mysterious, old-fashioned idea that has nothing to do with your everyday life. However, if you really want to succeed, you must find a way to draw wisdom from all possible sources. Where do you find wisdom in today’s information age? Unfortunately, you won’t be able to find it on Google. Indeed, the wealth of information at our disposal makes finding true wisdom far more difficult.

This is due to the fact that wisdom has nothing to do with intellect or understanding. Wisdom, on the other hand, is a mentality – a way of looking at life with greater perspective, rather than being overwhelmed and disappointed by day-to-day victories and defeats. The answer is to avoid looking for insight outside of yourself and instead look inside. Make the most of your knowledge and trust your instincts.

The wisdom you possess is intangible and enigmatic, but it is very real and strong. While we all have innate wisdom, it is shaped and reinforced by our interactions with the outside world. So, instead of being crushed by an unfortunate event, you may choose to draw wisdom from it.

If we think of life as a classroom, however, we can learn something from every experience. Adopting that mentality will allow you to draw strength from situations that would otherwise demoralize you.
