What is existentialism?

Recently I got feedback on my blog from a very dear friend of mine. He describe it with one word: existentialism. I do get a lot of feedback and most of the time it’s pretty easy to figure out what they mean. Even politically correct words like prosperous, interesting, frugal etc. But this one takes the cake.

For the record, I had to google it to fully understand it and the definition is as follows:

Existentialism is a term applied to the work of certain late-19th- and 20th-century European philosophers who, despite profound doctrinal differences, shared the belief that philosophical thinking begins with the human subject—not merely the thinking subject, but the acting, feeling, living human individual. While the predominant value of existentialist thought is commonly acknowledged to be freedom, its primary virtue is authenticity. In the view of the existentialist, the individual’s starting point is characterized by what has been called “the existential attitude”, or a sense of disorientation, confusion, or dread in the face of an apparently meaningless or absurd world. Many existentialists have also regarded traditional systematic or academic philosophies, in both style and content, as too abstract and remote from concrete human experience.

When I think of the word, Tim Burton comes to mind! Check out his interview with The New York Times. Now, he is my benchmark for existentialism!
Thanks for the feedback and keep it coming!

  1. Have you watched burton’s most recent work, Miss Peregrine’s School for Peculiar Children? Fairly intriguing for the imagination like most of his works. The array of characters reminded me of one of Burton’s animation ‘9’. Humanizing each of the character, in a search quest that of truth and bravery. Not sure if you’ll like it but he never fails to amuse me! Being authentic or different is not an easy quest. but keep sharing. there’s always the flip side of cause and effect and it takes another to examine the skeleton.
